The Web Platform Installer 3.0 is incredibly buggy. It won't work for me in a Windows Vista environment and it also won't work on an XP (SP3) machine.
After about 60-90 minutes into the install I eventually get an unhelpful message in both Windows environments: "We're sorry. SQL Server Express 2008 R2 - This product did not install successfully." No explanation is given for WHY the install failed so
there is really no helpful path to resolve the issue. This forum has unfortunately been unhelpful to date. I did get 2 responses over several weeks - and thank you both for these attempts - but neither response proved helpful in resolving the problem. Perhaps
someone with a better understanding could offer some good install advice. ASP.net offers a terribly unfriendly and buggy environment. I wish I wasn't tasked to deal with ASP.net, but I am. It would be great to get some quality help from someone sympathetic
I will keep asking the question since I have run out of options: Is there a way to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2 on either Windows XP (SP3) or Windows Vista, without relying on Web Platform Installer 3.0 which simply doen't work. There must be some
other way to install this thing.

Installation should be pretty straight forward for any microsoft products.
As long as you know what feature you install then all will be okay.
You can get the installer from here :
As for the software and hardware requirement see this:
Look at the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Tools (64-bit) x64 or the 32 bit section for more details.
Hope this helps.

As per my knowledge SQL Server (Server) cannot be installed on Windows XP.(Though the client can be) but Windows 7 and Vista should be able to support it.Please try installing all the required Windows Updates and try once again...

just to clarify gayomard's comment here:
SQL Server can be installed on Windows XP. I have tried to install SQL Server on my Windows XP machine and it works. However, you are unable to install SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bits version on Windows XP version.
Please check Microsoft website for details about SQL Server requirements.

Maybe you can have a problem with your frameworks. You must re-install your frameworks. Before you can uninstall your frameworks with this tool. You can download this tool from http://furkanfindikoglu.com/cleanup_tool.exe . After you must install all frameworks.
Probably your problem will be solved.

Thanks Sgt. Blog.
I tried the install from your link on an XP (SP 3) machine. No luck. I got the following message:
The following error has occurred:
Library not registered.
This actually happened twice during the same install attempt. I will try the install again on a Windows Vista machine to see if I get better results. (I don't know how to handle the library thing.) Thank you again.
