When I start out a build out using this public image:
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Base (AMI Id: ami-1cbd4475)
I enable the role "Web Server". I install Web Platform Installer and it shows that ASP.NET 4.0 is installed. I can configure an App Pool with .NET 4.0 Integrated pipeline. So, it appears that with Server 2008 R2, the "Web Server" role supports ASP.NET 4.0
out of the box, right? Wrong.
I deploy an empty ASP.NET 4.0 site to c:\inetpub\wwwroot and when I navigate to http://127.0.0.1/Default.aspx I get a 500.21 error.
The only way to fix (as far as I know) is to follow these instructions:

please look into the log file to find the exact error message. The "500.19 error" does not provide adequate information here.

Here you go...
Deployed a VS2010 starter ASP.NET app to a site configured with a .NET 4.0 Integrated Pipeline app pool.
I can fix it by repairing the the .NET 4.0 installation per the above link.
