I am building an information site that I would like cartain users to be able to edit in place. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can start looking/how to make it so that when a user clicks on an edit button the page will change from a static read
only page into one they can edit? I know how to do the membership roles and setup but I dont know a good way to make the page editable. Does this make sense? I am not too go at explaining ideas I have.

I think you are looking for a Wikipedia type knowledge base application in which you want to allow end users to edit the information, which will be further verified and approved by administrator. Only after approval of changed content from admin, the edited
data or new info will be visible on the website.
In order to get this done, you need to look at various wiki type application, Wikipedia is one of the example. on Wikipedia page you will able to see Edit button, on click of edit button complete page change into editable page from a simple view page. After
making any change over the page it goes for approval of Wikipedia admin. Only after approval of changed data from admin, new info get updated in original data. And every change is track by application. In order to make any change you should have a valid account
on the website. Wikipedia is open source which you can download and use it.
List of various other wiki applications (paid and open source both) are:

If any wiki doesn't support multimedia section, you'll just need to make minor customization. Developing wiki from scratch will be time taking.
