I am using VS 2010 and I usually use IE as my default browser but decided to test with Google Chrome just to see what the site would look like. when I ran the app via Chrome and then selected a record I ran into a null session error that I do not have when
using IE. What could be causing this?

You may copied the url and pasted directly in chrome. Due to this session becomes null. For this you have to login to the application and enter the credentials again. Session is different for different users.

No; you are not understanding. The browser is starting fresh when I run in debug mode in VS2010.

If possible, please post the relevant code of your page which open in chrome and throw the null session exception.
Without code, I guess that the first time you assign session variable in IE, then you open the chrome and this time when you try to get session value, the session will be null because the session that associate with the sessioncookie is set in IE browser,
but not in chrome browser.
Or if you use some asp.net control such as Menu control. There's some render issue using in chrome. You can use css adapters(http://www.asp.net/cssadapters/) to fix it. you can also visit this link:
Hope this can help you.
