ViewState sucks that is why you are doing MVC. However, ViewState has its uses for maintaining form state on postbacks and abstracts away the boring code to write. It is clunky at best and doesn't persist data if you leave the page and come back. MVC just
lacks this feature pretty much which is good and bad.
I was annoyed at the web's answer for this but didn't want to givei some alternative bloated solution. Instead, I created an HTML 5 plugin with jQuery to fix this problem. You can see it here -> http://www.jasonsebring.com/dumbFormState
