there is a button titled 'Contact' where forum members can directly email other members. is there a way to block this? today (first time) i received an email directly from another forum member in one of the threads i answered. IMHO private emails are selfish

i guess the answer is to select the 'No' radiobutton here:
Edit Profile => Email => Email Options.
but IIRC doing that also turns off emails if you select:
Enable Email Notifications of forum/thread subscriptions and replies to my posts
in your profile (i could be wrong or it could have changed)

I don't think you have the possibility to turn that off at this moment. People can simply contact another member by pressing the contact button on one of your replies and there choose for sending a mail or a private message.

Exactly! I mostly simply send a message back that (s)he should simply post the question in the correct forum.
I get quite some private messages or emails myself from members, sometimes with 0 post counts, contacting me directly with questions. To pm's I respond with a formal message, on emails, I hardly reply back nowadays. That might seem harsh but the continuous
stream of mails make me acting as such. On these forums there's a great community of which I'm proud to be a part of since 2002 and it's a place for asking questions and getting answers. Microsoft itself also invests in that by hiring MSFT helpers who try
to provide answers to those questions that fall through the holes and don't get the attention they deserve.

thanks for the response.

that's what i thought. unfortunate, but maybe something that can be added in the future? (i went through this discussion forum and noticed the company in charge of the site is in the middle of a number of performance upgrades) hopefully one of the site admins
can weigh in on that as a future feature request...

don't think it's harsh at all. and agree with you 100% - no problem with pm's, just don't like the idea of receiving unsolicited email (isn't that what you call spam?)
also imagine as one of the moderators (paid or volunteer) you've got your hands full with dealing with a number of issues. i think you guys do a
great job, especially considering how high-traffic this site is and some other obvious problems like; some posters only motivated by increasing their point total; other posters blatantly trying to get
anyone to do their work for them; etc, etc. keep up the good work!
