I used the code from the sample provided on AjaxControlToolkit website.
This is how it looks in IE8:
The same in Firefox looks just fine:
And in Chrome:
Any idea why and how could I get it decent looking in IE8?
I'm using AjaxControlToolkit.dll v3.5.40412.2.

Did you use any custom css or just the default css.
Try to run it in compatibility view and see if it displays correctly.

No custom CSS...

I am sure Tabs don't has a compatibility
problems with IE8. Please check whether some css effect that. For the details about Tabs, please refer to:http://www.asp.net/ajax/ajaxcontroltoolkit/Samples/Tabs/Tabs.aspx.
