I am tentatively researching a asp.net web application that would basically be as the following:
Users log into the website and choose a workflow to perform.
The workflow consists of : filling out specific document formats with needed information and then sending off to a recipient.
Basically it would be an application for para-legals who need to perform a business workflow: someone passes away (example).
The paralegal has to fill out documents A,B,C and D. They fillout out fields in the document template which are saved to a datastore (could be a database, could be XML files, JSON, etc) They user can save their current data and complete the form at a later
From an architecture stand point I was thinking of a rules engine that reads an xml template to determine all the rules for each document (xample document A,B,C and D ) in the scenaria described above.
The system would provide summary report of documents that still need filling out for the workflow, fields, etc that still need filling out for specific documents. It would have audits of who had updated the document and what fields were updated and when.
Multiple users would be able to view and or edit the document (example: employees within a law office).
Other bells and whistles would be reminders for when workflows needed to be completed but that is not really the main question asked.
Can someone suggestion technology, framework, architecture, plugins, library, open source projects that may exist that help to faciliate this.
Understand Microsoft WWF could be used for the workflow aspect, what about the storing of field data for documents (which eventually are printed).
Manageability is very key here: be able to update the rules engine, templates, and fields easily as laws change, etc.
