Hi, I'd like to add a checkbox to registration so people can sign up for email newsletters and maybe also add it to the profile page so people could unsubscribe. I'm thinking I should add a yes/no field to the membership database to show the member's choice
to receive email, but not sure how to proceed. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

I am also encouraging users to sign up for a newsletter.
I thought about doing it the way you ask, and then decided that I do not want to become a victim of my own success. What I mean is, think big... real big... like 5,000 people want your newsletter. Then with unsubscribe and all that it could be a very big
I use a commercial CAN-SPAM act compliant email marketing program; these start as low as $8 per month and give you tons of statistics and handle all the subscribe / unsubscribe headaches for us.
I wanted to use a check box like you said, but instead I just added the newsletter signup form onto my website log-in page. So every time they go to log in they see the newsletter sign-up form (and on the registration page). I don't know if it helps, but
then my users know that they can use the site without getting my newsletter if they want. It does require extra steps on the part of the users though.
