I was in a discussion with a friend about the best operating system to use for hosting AspNet and SqlServer. I thought about it and wasn't actually sure. I assume they don't use Windows Webserver 2008, and instead a Unix system, but thought I would get
an experts answer to what is best now. I have some Lamp modeled sites, and know they run Linux, Apach, MySql, and PHP.

All ASP.NET hosting companies run Windows. There is no suitable Unix/Linux solution for running ASP.NET. ASP.NET has nothing to do with LAMP.

Most of the ASP.NET hosting companies use Windows 2003/2008 servers. It could be possible that some companies offer and Linux hosting as well.

I think, only one way to use ASP.NET and SqlServer is to use Windows OS. there are some projects allows you to use asp.net on linux:
but better way is still you Windows server.
you can run sql server on linux, only if you are running the Linux version of VMWare (or your favorite virtual machine program), with Windows OS on the virtual machine. but it is not a good approach :P

I assume then that most hosting companies are are just running Windows Web Server and not the full blown Windows Server then, is that right? I also assume that you would only run Windows Web Server once on a machine, or is this where virtualization comes
into play whereby you would run multiple versions?
