As some of you have noticed, the default avatar image has gone away. Rather than display the default
silhouette image, a random
Identicon will be displayed. This random image cannot be changed unless you choose to upload a custom avatar. If you would like to remove your randomly displayed Identicon, click on the "Edit Profile" link, select the "Avatar" tab, enable the avatar,
then click "upload". That's it!
If you have any issues, concerns, or feedback, please click
Q. Can I change my Identicon to a different image?
A. Yes and No. The only way to change the Identicon is if you choose to upload your own image. However, you cannot change the random Identicon.
Q. If I upload a custom avatar will it also be changed on the other .NET sites (e.g. silverlight.net, windowsclient.net, or iis.net)?
A. Yes and No. Each site has its own profiling system. Custom avatars will be reflected in the other .NET sites, but if you choose to leave a random Identicon you will have to go to your profile in each respective site and set your profile accordingly.
Q. If I upload a custom avatar will it also be changed on the other Microsoft sites (e.g. msdn.microsoft.com)?
A. No, user profile information is not currently shared with other Microsoft sites.
Q. I changed my avatar or Identicon but the changes do not get displayed -- what is happening?
A. Please allow up to 15 minutes as your profile information is cached.
Q. Where can I find some custom avatars to use and upload?
A. You can of course use images that you generate yourself, such as a photopgraph or a drawing. You might also consider a site with royalty-free images, such as this
Q. If I upload a custom image, is there a recommended size?
A. We recommend uploading images which are square (same height and width), and that are no larger than 4 MB. For the best uploading experience, we recommend image sizes which are 100k or less. Images are resized to fit in a 80x80 square when they are
stored and displayed on the site, so you will experience the least amount of distortion of your custom avatar of it has the same height and width.
Q. Why have identicons been introduced?
A. The identicons have been introduced to help users navigate through a comment or forum thread and be able to more readily follow the contributors. They have also been introduced to give more visual interest to the site.
