ok, on the asp.net website it says:
"These kits, once downloaded are integrated directly into the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition..."
so i download the beerhouse starter kit and double click on the .sln file. this opens Visual Web Developer Express 2008 and gives me the following error:
...\Projects\beerhouse\TBH_Setup\TBH_Setup.vdproj' cannot be opened because its project type (.vdproj) is not supported by this version of Visual Studio.
why is that?

The vdproj is the setup project.

As pointed out, you can install Web Deployment projects for VS 2008. If you don't plan to use the deployment project (say, you intend to use FTP or something else to deploy) you can just remove the project from the solution. It won't affect how it runs at
This is actually explained in the Deployment chapter of the accompanying book if you have it.

How does one use the setup project? Are there actually clear instructions somewhere documenting the steps to install the Beerhouse project? So far, this has been an exercise in frustration for me because I bought the book, but cannot even get the template
website compiled and working. Any help is appreciated...

There is no reason to use the setup project if you only want to try out the site locally.
You should be able to just unzip the download, load the solution, press F5 and go.
