I have a fairly large table (selecting a person from a contacts table called SupportContact) , by default the scaffolding is displaying this is as a dropdownlist. And since it is so large that won't work. I created a little popup selector that lets me
select a contact from a separate pop up page in a gridview, I then pass back the value to my insert page. that works just fine, except for the inserting part.
What doesn't work and was hoping for some ideas is I'd like to just pass the value back to a custom field template, and still have the insert work. When I do that now I get an error saying
Cannot convert value of parameter 'SupportContact' from 'System.String' to 'SupportContact'
SupportContact being the table/class name, the value in the custom feild template is the FK value of the contact record.
This btw, isn't my ideal solution. ideally I'd like to be able to pass back the contact record "client ID" (client ID is unique within the SupportContact table, but not a PK) back to the insert page and have it submit. Lord knows how to get that to work.
If that is 2L2R then maybe some ideas on how to handle child tables with way too many records to allow for a drop down list?

Hi Mark, I have something that was a conversion from a filter that was demonstrated in the old DD Futures on codeplex, here's me article:
An Advanced FieldTemplate. The field template allows you to type in the first few characters and then a dropdown list is populated with items starting with what you typed in.
I also have some cascade solutions one here: Cascading Filters and Fields and a new one based on the cascade file again from the old futures project that handles
n levels of cascade [:)]
