There are a couple of featues I would like to see related to Participation points:
Older Posts. Some of the hard questions to answer to actually get answered. As they sit there, incentive to address them drops. I think upping the number of points for answering an older (but not aceint) post should go up slightly to encourage
some of the more diffucult posts to be addressed. I hate it when I see the same problem someone else had 6 months ago, but no was able to answer it.
Kudos. Answers are helpful, some are more helpful that others. Some mechanism to note really helpful answers should exist, with some sort of point reward for realyl helpful one (1pt per 10 "This really helped me", kudos, thumbs up, type thingy [yes,
that is the professional term]) This would both allow users to see the most helpful answers, and reward people for providing answers that help a lot of people.
Self Promoting. You should not get point for marking your own posts as answered. It seems more often than not, when someone is doing it they are not actually answering the question they posed. Its annyoning when I am trying to help, and even more
annoying when I go looking for questions I have that have already been answered. The only reason to do it then it for the points. Remove the driver and hopefully lessen the probelm.

This might encourage necro-posting which is frowned upon.
For short term counting this makes sense but in the big picture, people who supply many good answers are going to end up with more points regardless of any weighting system.
If you are the OP (Original Poster), you do not get any points for marking your own post as an answer.
PS: I hope your friends to the south got those fires put out.
