VWDE - 2008
Had Visual Web Developer 2008 installed and working on a machine running Vista Home Premium. When checking for updates I was instructed to download and install SP1.
Tried to download and install SP1 but when nearly done an error came up stating that a previous example of VWDE had been detected so the installation was aborted. Tried several times and several fixes with no result
except wasted time.
Uninstalled the existing version of VWDE and attempted to download and install VWDE with SP1 and SQL Server Express 2008. After an hour or so an error appeared telling me the existing version was still in the way.
Then, I went through the machine and REMOVED EVERY INSTANCE AND FILE having to do with VWDE.
Tried to download and install VWDE 2008 and was instructed to download SP1 first. I was able to download and install that successfully.
Tried to download and install VWDE 2008 with SQL Server Express. The download and install is incomplete. VWDE did install but only shows the Source view. There are no buttons at the bottom for Design or Split.
SQL Server DID NOT install, so cannot create databases within a web project.
Tried installing Sql Server 2005 Express – INSTALL FAILED – instructed to download and install sqlcli_x64.msi and reinstall ss2005 Express.
Download sqlcli_64.msi and ran it. FAILED stated that a higher version already exists on the machine.
Totally baffled, even uninstalling and re installing doesn't work

I recommend you to remove all the existing VWD2008 components and then download and install the setup from the path
http://www.microsoft.com/express/product/ . You will also find SQL Server 2008 express setup too.
To completely remove, here is a link.
This is the guide for forcing out visual studio using msizap:
Let me know the results.

always check before the installation if there are newer versions. some aren't compatible with x64. The clean unistall can be tricky as Windows usually leave something behind. Maybe the best solution would be to backup files and reinstall the Windows, and
completly upgrade it before installing the apps. I have Windows 7 x64 and had only problems with SQL server but installed the SP 2 or SP 1 and works now.

I followed your instructions and have a different problem now. sql server 2005 nor 2008 will install. vwde still is incomplete as described originally

I am prepared to try anything but have no idea how to do what you are suggesting.
More details please

you need to provide more informations about errors you get. There can be several errors during the installation of SQL Express, you can have some files missing, downloaded files are corrupted, system is having errors, etc. The best would be to reinstall
the Windows and then download the newest version. Everything is working on my copy of X64 Windows 7 although I don't use Express but "Professional" version.
Paste the error or search for it on the Google and then try to find something out. There is also solution for any error on Google.

I don't know how much clearer I can be if you read the original post.
Are you saying that the only solution is to reformat my hard drive?

it can be. although I would do this if nothing else can be done. When you make so much installations there can be huge chaos on your computer.
Have you tried to install the programs on another computer?
I usually go like this:
a) format disk and install windows
b) install all drivers and updates / service packs
c) install programs
d) install Visual Studio / install SQL server
e) patch / update everything
Have you made any progress? you should post more information, what is not working at your moment, if you get any errors, etc...

The programs did work on the machine in question until I downloaded SP
The errors are that the server connection failed and that a previous install is already there.
I uninstalled everything and no go
The programs are installed on another machine running XP
So, you are suggesting that I reformat my hard drive? and reinstall the OS?
There is no other fix?
