I just uploaded one to my profile, but there was no confirmation that it actually uploaded successfully, nor does my profile display the avatar I just uploaded.
Either it takes a while to update, or it hasn't worked. Any ideas?
Is there a filesize/dimensions limitation, or is that taken care of by the site?

It has been a while, but I do believe the update took a little while to replicate out and be displayed. Maybe a moderator can confirm/deny this.

I love my pic! Find me one person that was not amazed the 1st time they saw those cards fall after beating Solitare back on Windows 3.1. It was amazing!

It could take a bit for your avatar to show, but typically I think the timeframe is 15 minutes or less.
Here are the steps to update your avatar:
1. Log in to the site
2. Navigate to Edit Profile https://forums.asp.net/user/EditProfile.aspx by clicking on Edit Profile in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
3. Click the Avatar tab
4. Make sure the "Enable avatar" option is set to Yes. If it's not, change it to yes, press Save, then navigate back to the Edit Profile screen.
5. Click the Browse button to select an image on your local machine.
6. Select the image on your computer for your avatar (ideally choosing a square image whose height and width are the same, and whose byte size is less than 4 MB)
7. Click the Update button.
This is all there is to it. Please *do not* press the Save button. This causes your old avatar image to be re-saved. (This is the weird quirk that is probably tripping you up.)

Also make sure to press Ctrl+F5 to re-update the cached version of your avatar.

There is a job that synchronizes the avatars across the domains (asp, silverlight, iis, windowsclient). I updated it to run more frequently so you should see better update times (<2 mins).
Hopefully, you see an improvement.
