I've never dealt with applications for mobile devices before. We plan to create a simple application that would use file with parts and should be able to create orders and send these orders to workstation.
Does it sound feasible? If yes, how and from where should I start.
Thanks in advance.

Can your mobile device communicate with a windows service?
If so, I suggest that you start with the database, data layer and web service. Get this tested before starting on the mobile device itself.

Thanks for getting to me on this problem.
Here is the specifications for this application I see proposed:
In order to facilitate discussion of this project, we will break it down into three sections or phases:
Write application to run on the barcode scanner.
This application will need to do the following:
Import a file containing current inventory items, pack out quantity, and price.
Allow users to scan a batch of items into a preliminary order, specifying desired quantity.
For each item scanned, display a brief description, price per unit and Pack Out Qty.
Users will input the desired quantity, at which point the scanner application will display the total cost of the line item.
The file we already tried to create (in CSV) format and it's ~16-18MB
I have the Scanner here and using touch screen options I explored a menu a little bit - it doesn't have Internet connection, so the file has to be
downloaded/uploaded to a regular PC via port, say, once a day.
On the computer I'm currently on I have VS 2005 installed and seems no SQL Server (though I see SQL Server configuration tools).
Also the models for the scanner are these:
Deployment of finalized application on target scanner
Export the order to a desktop-based application running on a Microsoft Windows workstation.
Now, can you please help me with the initial steps, how should I start?
We have existing VFP application (which I didn't see yet, plan some quick tour today) which is going to be on the other end of the chain.
BTW, if you want to contact me directly by my e-mail, I would appreciate this as well.

I suggest that you locate the the emulator for the Dolphin 7900. Knowing the way that sucessive versions of Visual Studio have encapsulated extras for the previous version, it may well be worth your while upgrading your Visual Studio to VS2008. Beyond that
that is little I can do to help you, other suggest that you look on www.CodeProject for sample Windows Mobile 5.0

I've installed VS2008, but interestingly it had less templates (only one) for Smart Device applications. The form look more like the Scanner (in VS 2005 it looks like a regular form). I'm wondering what should I use (VS 2008 or VS 2005).
In any case, when I tried to search for emulator, this is the thread that comes first :)
For now we would be using ActiveSync to get data from PC to Scanner and back.

In case you need to store some data on the device - try SQLITE
"So should SQLite be used for all database driven applications? No.
Like all databases, SQLite has its list of shortcomings. It is not suitable for a client server application or as a networked database. It’s not suited well for a multi user scenario and can have serious file locking issues when accessed simultaneously over
the network. Quite for the same reason, SQLite is not suited for a multi-threaded or a multi-process application-database access scenario.
To conclude, SQLite is very suitable for memory constraint systems like WinCE, Palms, Smart Phones, embedded devices and also normal single user desktop applications where its small memory footprint, single library and its copy and paste deployment feature
give it a distinct advantage."

Thanks again, I was going to follow that tutorial, but didn't have time yet.

I marked both of your replies as answers, though I didn't really progress much. I was working on some other projects and my colleague in the meantime already started and made a huge progress in this application, so may be I'll try to join him and see if
I can be of any help.

I checked User Manual for the scanner, but I could not find there any code/functions that will help me to display the information that was scanned.
How is it done?
Thanks in advance.
