I have a site I created in VS2008. It worked fine locally but when I moved it to the production server, I got this error:
I haven't seen this error before -- but I also just got VS2008. I know the server doesn't have 3.5 installed. Is it a requirement for a site created in VS08?
I tried creating another site -- and took the basic web.config it made and got the same error.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

VS2008 supports framework targeting.
Look at your application properties and specify the framework you will be deploying.

Do you have the System.Web.Extensions.Designer and System.Web.Extensions DLLs in your bin directory on the server?

If your project is targeting 3.5 Framework then server (where your app is being deployed to) will need to have 3.5 Framework in order to run your app successfully.
I would recommend target 2.0 Framework when creating a project, that will be deployed to a server running .NET 2.0.
Here is MSDN article on how to target specific framework:
