I'm uncertain about what can be done with "points". Likewise, I've little information regarding how to get "points".
From thread http://forums.asp.net/t/1275648.aspx, it appears that there are at least three ways to get points
and at least one way to lose points:
-- answer was un-marked (??? may cause points to be lost ???)
-- post was marked as the answer
-- replied to a post
-- marked a post as the answer
Also, I recall seeing some posts that apparently imply that writing an article (I'm unsure where the ariticle goes) and
even posting someone else's article seems to be another way to gain points.
I found nothing in a FAQ and searching with
recognition points answer un-marked marked replied
returned zero hits:

I'm guessing that maybe somewhere there's a page that clearly explains how to get/lose points
as well as what can be done with those points. (After 10 years of collecting AirMiles, I had
enough points to get four tickets to the Metro Toronto Zoo, not airplane tickets, only zoo entry tickets).
It would also be interesting (at least to me) to easily see a list of the top 100 points holders.
Examples from chess: http://ratings.fide.com/toplist.phtml;
in the [class="ForumPostUserArea"] left most column of each post, above the [class="ForumPostUserName"]
user's name, we see string [class="ForumPostUserAttribute"] that looks like these examples:
73 point Member
73,073 point All-Star
In the above, the word "point" could be made into an informational link to an article such as
"Everything you always wanted to know about asp.net points but were afraid to ask".
Thus, intuitively, one could quickly learn about the asp.net "points" system.
