and the C# that I'm having trouble picking up.
Any suggestions on any books I should pick up? Specifically I would like a book that builds a working application piece by piece as you learn everything.

Have a look at the ASP.NET C# books at
They provide a sample chapter (or two) - Mike's books are very good as they take you from entry level in reasonably easy steps.
(O'Reilly books are also very good)

Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 E-Commerce in C# 2005: From Novice to Professional by Cristian Darie and Karli Watson is walks you through step by step building an online shop. Check out the
reviews on Amazon for a feel of what the book is like, it could be exactly what your after.
I think they are brining out an ASP.net 3.5 version soon as well
