I have an image and would like to dynamically overlay a number of small clickable icons (links) based on x/y coordinates that I pull out of my database.
I was thinking of using an image map but I have heard that they can be arkward to work with. Alternatively I thought of just laying some custom GDI icons ontop of a map and making them imagebuttons?

If you are using a map with icons on top, I recommend storing the icon locations in a database, then looping through the records overlaying the icons using .DrawImage.
Then use an ImageMap and programatically add the clickable regions dynamically by again looping through the database.
I know you don't want to use an imagemap, but using an ASP.NET ImageMap may be easier to use?
