I'm using Visual Studio 2008 for development and the Development Server (Cassini). When I make a change in the source page the change doesn't take effect in the Development Server until I manually stop it and let it restart again when
I browse the page. It doesn't matter if I'm running with debugging or without. I did web development for years in VS 2003 and VS 2005 and never had this issue. I've searched for settings on this and can't find any. Any ideas?

Hi homer, Can you give us a little more info please? I've used vs2008 since it's inception and never had this problem yet and I live on vs. Have you turned on any type of caching in your config files? Is it only 1 web app or all your web apps doing it? Have
you tried creating a quick new web site to see if it's happening there?
I know I'm asking stupid questions but you haven't given much info so I'm just trying to pre-empt anything and offer some guidance.
Thanks for the reply Storm. No I haven't enabled any caching and it carries over to all of the pages on any website. I've created just a sample website with just one label where I set the label text in Page_Load then started Without Debugging then changed
the text of the label in the Page_Load but the changes weren't reflected when saving the new page and refreshing. I've tried clearing out the asp.net temp files in the framework folder and restarting the project too.
I don't think you asked stupid questions at all and I really appreciate any help. Those are questions I should've answered in my original post. Thank you so much for your help.
Some more questions, maybe someone picks up on something who is more experienced than me while we're going through the steps and finds your problem.
Are you developing on the HTTP type or File System type option? Are you using the Web Developer service or an IIS service? Which version of vs are you using?
Here's a quick run down of how I would normally approach a new project:
Start VS 2008
New Web Site
Location: File System (select my target folder etc and ok it)
Add label control to Front End
F5 to run (Use debugging or not, either way)
Close web page (always ensuring that my project is stopped afterwards and not hanging, if hanging, I click the stop button on the IDE toolbar to force it to shut down)
Change label text property
F5 to run (Use debugging or not, either way)
Please follow these same steps and let me know if there's something you change along the way, I'll try replicate your problem if I can.
Lastly, have you tried using CTRL+F5 on the page? What is the outcome of doing it?
I followed you're exact scenario above and the text stays the same. To be clear, I started a new website in VS2008, dropped a label control on to the page, ran the project by pressing F5, the label control rendered the text "Label", I closed IE, then changed
the label's text property to "New Label Text", pressed F5, the label control rendered the text "Label". Did the same using CTRL+F5 instead of just F5 and got the same results. If I stop the ASP.NET Development Server and let it reset on its own when running
the project the label control will render the correct text. I have a backup PC with VS2008 on it and it doesn't have these issues so I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to reproduce it.
Anyone know what might be causing this? Are there other good workarounds? For example, do I loose any debugging features if I switch to local IIS, any quirks that I'd experience developing against local IIS? Any other good development servers that could
tie in to VS2008?
My only advice right now would be to completely reinstall windows. I'm pretty sure when I say the problem isn't with visual studio but with your browser settings. You can first try resetting your browser settings back to default and clearing your temp files.
That failing, do a fresh install of windows.
I actually reinstall my windows every 3 months to ensure my system is clean and did so Monday after I had completed downloading all the latest service packs for VS and Framework.
To let you know it doesn't matter if you're using IE or Firefox during development. For example, I start the site from visual studio and the page renders, then I make a change to the page (can be as small as just literal text) and then refresh the browser
and the changes aren't picked up. Opening that page in Firefox renders the original page when I started the site and not the updated page. If I leave the Firefox window open, stop the web development server, start the development server again, and then refresh
the Firefox page I get the updated page.
Also, I tried an experiment where I created a new site but did it in the local IIS. The issue stayed the same as if Visual Studio is having issues writing the updated changes to the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder. If I changed a page I had to reset IIS
for the changes to be available in the browser (regardless of IE or FF). I've cleared all of the Temporary ASP.NET Files thinking that maybe there was a corrupt folder or file but that didn't help. I'm running on Vista and upgraded to SP1 but that didn't
help. I previously didn't have SP1 for Visual Studio but I installed that and it didn't help.
This is really annoying and I don't want to do a full reinstall of my system just to get the web development server working properly. I don't really care about the Web Development Server working correctly if someone had a good workaround or replacement.
I was suprised that I could find a homegrown replacement for Web Development Server. Possibly one that didn't rely on the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder.
I continue to have this issue and its making me crazy. Does anyone have anything I can try? No matter of a new website or existing site, I have to restart the asp.net development server every time I make changes to the site that I want reflected in the
browser. It doesn't matter if I'm in debug or without debug. I'm not sure what else to do other than possibly go back to winxp where I've never had this issue.
Not to sound desperate <g> but I'm begging for help.

WOW, 5 months you've been struggling like this! 10 points for commitment! I've reinstalled my windows in that time and I'm due for another reinstall in December. Honestly I don't know why people are so afraid of the dreaded Format C:
By reinstalling your rig you remove any contaminants left by other software as well as keeping your fingure on the pulse of your projects. I've on numerous occassions met developers who were too scared to reinstall and if their pc's crashed they couldn't
figure out why their projects didn't work anymore. Reinstalls keep you vigilant and trained.
Go on, reinstall that rig, you know you want to [<:o)]
Does this not "flush" the old pages when you do an iisreset?
It does flush out the old pages and recompile if I'm running the dev site in IIS and do an iisreset. Of course the issue with that is when doing development I'd rather not have to do an iisreset each time that I modify a page.
As for the reinstall, I'm not afraid of it. I was a PC tech in a large corporation for many years before moving on to programming. My issue with reinstalling is that it seems like a very time consuming step to take to fix this one little problem.

ummm, so you'd rather struggle with the frustration than spend the 30-45 odd minutes it takes for Ghost to reinstall your windows? I'm guessing you don't use ghost in which case you're comparing around 10 hours of reload time vs the productivity you've lost
over the last 5 months. I'm assuming you don't manage multiple flagship systems then.
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files
If a project goes AWOL, those files there can cause it to get stuck and prevent overwriting. Clearing the cache can often fix a number of cache based issues.
And chill out mk31762, we didn't write the software, we're just a community of developers helping each other out.
Personally I'd be very careful with removing this registry entry or simply following this route since it results in a rather extensive impact on the system. Rather setting it to 0 would be the same and is also the default (same as if it doesn't exist) but
that would allow you to tweak as you go since another project might require a different route. Also, only those who have installed this hotfix would normally have this setting since it's not part of the standard install or the service packs and you weren't
supposed to install it unless you actually had a problem.
It's good that you found "a" solution and I commend you for it, but I would caution against just anyone following this route. If in doubt rather just set it to 0 (if it's not already, it's supposed to be 0).
And so there is. On the property page for the Project - NOT the Solution - on the Web tab, under Servers, there is a checkbox labeled "Enable Edit and Coninue". This needs to be selected in order to display changes without having to restart the Development
Server.
I presume this is checked by default and I somehow unchecked it and that became the default for all future projects.
I have done a reinstall of VS, I have also reinstall Vista, and still the same problem, perhaps it is a third party app that is conflicting, I have an HP network scanner / printer and run Norton 360, otherwise nothing unusual, except the HP stuff that is
installed since it is a TC4200

Hi,
I have the same issue. Fresh install:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
Version 9.0.30729.1 SP
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 3.5 SP1
Please fix this... it should be simple enough to check that the file was changed since last compilation!

I mean seriously, reinstall windows? Are you kidding me? That is totally unacceptable. There has to be an answer.

I've found the cause of the problem. Remove this registry key and the problem will be solved:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET\FCNMode
Here is a link to the solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911272
