Please read through some of the first hits of the google search that Mike provided. It will explain to you what LDAP is and where it is used.
In short form, LDAP is a common protocol for accessing directories (not filesystem directories). In a Windows environment, the Active Directory is one kind of LDAP directory. Other LDAP directories include Novell eDirectory and OpenLDAP to mention a few.
A windows machine has native support for talking LDAP, usually through scripting.With just a couple lines of code you can e.g. search the directory for users matching a certain pattern.
In the .NET framework, LDAP support is made available through System.DirectoryServices, a set of classes which lets you access mainly Active Directory but should work (in theory) with just any LDAP-enabled source.
