I downloaded TheBeerHouse and trying to learn the (3 tiers) data access design and pattern.
I have done a lots of asp.net website and all my website are using Generic DataSet as the datasource for those databind controls like gridview,datalist..etc. (not a good practice?)
I learned that you can use Strong Typed Dataset or Custom Business Entity (as The Beer House does), But I have a question, are all the classes (those under DAL like ArticleDetail.cs and those under BLL like Article.cs) written by hand or generated by using
xsd.exe? If generated by xsd.exe, do you need to manually written the xsd or create the strong typed dataset in VS then using the xsd from there.
Why I am asking this question is because my new project may contain many this kind of entities, if these classes need to be manually written, I may go back to the general dataset which will save me time.
PS: I also download the classfied_starterkit, which is using strong typed dataset, is it?

All of the classes have been created by hand. If you wanted to use custom business classes but didn't want to write them by hand you could look at using an O/R mapper to generate them for you.

thanks for your reply. Are any OR mapping tools out there? never heard of them (for .net)
And what does the xsd.exe do, I thought it is suppose to generate C# classes from the xsd schema? (Java has some tools like this, generate classes from an xml schema).
So, maybe I need to just use strong typed DataSet for my projects? What's your suggetion? Also, how about the Dynamic data comes with the Ajax?

Yeah there are loads:
NHibernate for .NET
NHibernate is an Object-relational mapping (ORM) solution for the Microsoft .NET platform.
Wilson ORMapper for .NET

There are literally hundreds on the net and a lot on these forums as well.
does the xsd.exe do

You may want to check out the Flixon Site Generator.
The program comes with a set of templates which takes your database and recreates the exact infrastructure within The BeerHouse Starter Kit.
