I downloaded the Visual Web Developer 2008 and works fine. Then I thought that it would be nice to get the
Ajax Control Toolkit and develop some things that didn't require refreshing the page all the time.
Well, here's my issue. First, after starting VWD 2008 I go to the New Web Site screen. I see 2 AJAX Control
Toolkit Website there under My Templates. Is this ok?
Then I proceed to create the site as an AJAX site. I right click on the site in the Solution Explorer and added
the AJAX Control Toolkit under References. However, I only see the Ajax Extension on the toolbar like Timer,
Question: Is one supposed to see AJAX controls in the Toolbox like the password strength example in the site?
If one should see the controls, can anyone please tell me how they're added to the Toolbox?
I thought that I was supposed to see the controls in the Toolbar and then add them to the page in Design mode
as I do with the Textboxes and others. Then the control will produce code like the following:
<ajaxToolkit:PasswordStrength ID="PasswordStrength1" .....>
By the way, I ran the AjaxControlExtender.vsi. Four things installed well, two didn't. Here's the message from
the ones that didn't install:
"Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio."
Have a nice day and thanks in advance for your help.

Right click in your toolbox and select "add new tab", name the tab "Ajax control toolkit", then click in the new tab and select "choose items", click bowse, go to your "samplesite" folder in the ajax control toolkit folder and then go to the "bin" folder
and select the dll that you will find there, then click ok.

could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral bla bla or one of
its dependencies. The System can not find the file specified.

For all of you who had the same problem that I had, I have the solution. My Ajax Control Toolkit didnt show on the VS 2008 Toolbar.
1. - Decompress the Ajax Control Toolbox in a Folder.
2.- Set your VWD2008 Project as a .Net Framework 3.5 Project.
-----To do this is very easy:
Go to the View Menu on your VWD
Select Property Pages
Go To Build on the Tree
Where it says Target Framework Select the . Net Framework 3.5 (If you dont see it there, you have to install it from
3.- Add the AjaxControlToolkit.dll as a reference
Go to Website Menu
Click on Add Reference
Click on Browse Button
Go to the folder where you decompressed the Ajax Control Toolbox
Open the SampleWebSite Folder
Open the Bin Folder
And click Ok.
You will see the Toolbar filling itself with the new custom controls.
