The onbeforeunload event fires every time the page gets unloaded. Every postback, every refresh, every redirect. I don't see how it could be firing twice. Have you tried just using "onunload"?

It seems to be happening when the user tries to click on a tree navigation.

If that causes a postback, than it's supposed to fire.

Nope. Unless you change your TreeView so that it no longer posts back.
