I have a task to optimize public website.
Its performance dropped when it passed from 3000 to 250 000 users.
I have remote access to only control panel on remoting hosting.
No access to developers or to hosting support.
The client, the site owner, is on vacation but he is non-techie guy and,
as I understood, does not have access to previous developer or original code
The is in ASP.NET2.0 with MS SQL Server on two different machines.
I have no access permissions for any profiling, OS, monitoring, logs reading, or even checking protocols configured, etc.
I can only doenload, upload files through ftp.
I suspect that bottle neck is in slow communication between host with MS SQL2005 and website host machine.
What are possible bottleneck in such communication configuration?
How can I check it?

MSSQL2005 host and website using its database appears to me according to ip-addresses to be on different LANs
MSSQL Server is available for public access on internet, only throug SQL Server autentication
ASP.NET website accesses database through DNS name, port,
"Data Source=mssql.somepublicname.com,1093;Integrated Security=false;Database=databasename;User Instance=false;User ID=somepublicname.com;Password=I_guess_I_shouldnt_give_it_here;"
ftp access to hosting is extremely slow and timeouts comtinuously
Any guesse, comments, articles???

you are using HELM control panel which is very reputed control panel... i am also working in a hosting company and i know that if there will be any support exists then they can provide you internal IP of your database server which you can use in connectionstring
but as you said that there is no support... you can get HELM guide and all helm related problems here
www.webhostautomation.com. i exactly dont remember the database settings in helm bt i am sure that this exists... for more information read helm guide at above mentioned url.

the question is not about the HELM control
The database is connectable over internet
I connected to it through my local SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.
The account does not permit to configure or even to look into most of configurations.
The ftp for downloading/uploading is very slow and times out on 50 KB transfer.
I see clearly that MSSQL and webserver are on different hosts and even on different networks
since the first digits of ip-addresses are different.
And the database is clearly used by website over public internet connection.
Now, before reappearing of the customer, owner of the site,
I'd like to understand how such connection may be configured and/or optimized?
