I've been watching these forums off and on because I'm interested in implementing them, but historically it has seemed that more problem post were appearing than anything else. I'm wondering what the general received opinion is now on them. Have they reached
a point where someone could plug them into an existing production application without a lot of concern?

I think the only correct answer is "your mileage may vary".
Implementing the CSS adapters is in many ways a breaking change -- it needs to be thoroughly tested, and you will likely have to update your markup and/or code to make it work right.
Having said that, I have web sites which use some CSS-adapted controls (but by no means all), and there seems to be no issue once I get it up and running, styled the way I want, and tested thoroughly... but this may not mean you will have the same
