I've a few websites locally on my machine (all ASP.NET 1.1/2.0) and I deploy them to a 'live' server.
Now I've a few controls in one website which show the 'footer' or the 'left navigation' etc.
I wanted to add a link to one of the controls so all I did was go directly to the deployment server and edit the .ascx file and added the link - <a href etc.....
I noticed it didn't require a build and the link showed up fine.
Do I just need to rebuild when I change the code behind?

Normally Yes. You only need to build when you change something in the code behind OR if you have single page model (only ASPX with Tags and Code) then even when you change the page you'll need to rebuild.
