I know there are external libraries out there that do this but .NET should really have a build library for compressing files to zip or gz format.

GZipStream is the only .NET library that I am aware of that compresses and decompresses files. Check out the link below.

There are both GZip and Deflate compression methods in the Framework.
Both of these are new to the 2.0 Framework though so if you're still using 1.1, you'll need to update.
Additionally, if you need more flexibility in your compression (for example multiple source files in a single compressed output file) there is always the SharpZipLib
