Some great starter books like

You should also take a look at
Some great bits on here, be sure to check out the ebooks in the kids section one for vb.net and one for c# very good starter.
I think that it would help to understand xml and html first but you do not have to. You should find an overview of each on the above MS site.
One of the best ways to learn is to start out making simple projects.

Scott Mitchell is one of the best author for beginners. Check his
ASP.NET 2 Data Tutorials and ASP.NET in 24 Hours book.

My favorite is C# and .NET 2.0 Platform by Andrew Troelson. It even covers CIL programming. The books rocks!
