I'm trying to post to site with router front end, have passed port 80 to server and port 243 to server, when I begin publish from remote site I get to the login screen for the remote site and enter the server login and password, at this point it acts as
if login is incorrect and reshows the login box with URL preappended to username.
Does the server have to have ftp running? If so I must also pass ftp port from router to server
Thanks in advance

How do you publish the web site? The Target Location in Publish Web Site dialog is ftp, http, or driver path? Different protocols need different ports.
To know which ports Visual Studio need to use when publish, I recommend you to use the Network Monitor. It allows you to capture network traffic, view and analyze it, the log include the port information which you need.
