<select id="select1" style="display:none;">
To make it visible, use document.getElementById('select1').style.display = 'block';

You can put your control inside a div and set it's "display" or "visibility" properties to "none" or "hidden".
The difference between them is that a display:none element is set invisible and removed from the page flow, whereas visibility:hidden only "hides" it from the user's view.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that a "visibility:hidden" element can still be accessed while invisible, but, as I said, I'm not sure.
