i using IIS 5.1, vb.net 2003
trying to create a website project either using web service or web application, i got this msg
The web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the web project located at the following URL:
'http://localhost/WebApplication1' 'HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error'
Can anyone help?

Have you tried another name ? Verify that IIS is running and that you user have permission to create a WebApplication. Ideally, put yourself in the Administrators group.
Try to create the WebApplication1 first in IIS, and then create a web project using the same name.

This issue mostly caused by asp.net register issue. You can fix it by following steps:
1. Mapped between ASP.NET and IIS using the following command:
2. Reset IIS by using 'iisreset' command.
Then try to create the web application. Thanks.

Hi thanks for the help,
i tried to
administrator privilege a/c ,
created a new folder before creating a project in vb.net 2003
uninstall and install the vb.net 2003
reconfigure the frontpage extension 2000 in the IIS component
did the register mapping above mentioned, but the same error persists.

For the general steps not work, please use these two tools to help you for trouble shooting: filemon and regmon which can be downloaded from Microsoft:
Start monitor before create new project, and stop after the error occurred, check from the log that whether has any object not found or access deny information.
