If you are programmatically hiding a GridView column, you may find that paging won't work.
Code like this in the "RowDataBound" event:
e.Row.Cells(0).Visible = False
Can stop paging from working. (But it does hide the column!).

I have this problem but I don't want to hide the whole column just the data in the cell at row level.

Do you want a blank cell with no data or a cell with data that is not visible to the end user? For the latter make the text colour the same as the background. For the former simply intercept the row as it is made and insert blank data into it.
