I'm new to all this stuff too (I don't know ASP.Net or XML or CSS) but I worked it out through trial and error.
First make a backup of the file css-content.css in the App_Themes/Standard/ directory so that you have something to go back to if you totally screw it up.
Next have a read of the code on some of the pages to get a feel for what cssstyles they are using. Next go into the css-content file and change the values in there. It's easier then you'd think. With trial and error you should be able to figure it out.
I haven't seen CSS before yet it took me about 1-2hours to convert the look and feel of the website to something that looks completely different eg http://devtime.net/
