I'm new to .NET development, and today I tried to set up a .NET website with 1&1. Things were fine until I tried to start working with my database in Visual Studio. That's when I found out that I couldn't connect directly to my SQL database, because it was
behind a firewall. The online documentation and customer support weren't very helpful. They said I could only connect to the database through scripts, which prevents me from using all the cool stuff in Visual Studio.
What I need is a host that will allow me to directly connect to my database, so that I can use all of Visual Studio's tools, like the query builder, databinding helpers, web.config connection strings, and so on. Does anyone have any recommendations? Bandwidth,
pricing, and storage aren't a huge issue; what's important is integration with Visual Studio.

1) You can have local copy of SQL database on your development machine so you will be able to work with it from VS. When you are ready to upload site to 1&1 simply change connection string in web.config so your app. will use SQL db on 1&1 servers - that
is how i do it
2) or open acc. with
WebHost4life - very good hosting, asp.net , SQL with remote access so you can work with it from VS

After 5 months of get login and userid to access my website on WebHost4Life, I had to move. The CEO promised to monitor my site for the the login screen. The following month it happened again. They did give me a refund for the unused months.
Tech support was by chat room only.
My experience was not good.

I recommend Discountasp.net. I use them for many of my ASP.NET development and I have yet to find a host that offers ASP.NET like they do.
I would stay away from both webhost4life and webhostforasp.net. WebHost4Life has terrible support and their uptime is awful. When I contact support, not only can I not understand them, but their only solution is "we'll move your site to another server".
Instead of fixing the problem with the server, they just move me to another server.
Webhostforasp.net has the same issue, support is hard to understand and not good. When I saw their web site, I thought their pricing was too good to be true and it was. The fact that they claimed to support SQL Express should have been a dead give away
that they were too good be true (I mean Microsoft themselves say a host should not support SQL Express) in a production environment. Their support and uptime is just as bad as webhost4life.

I recommend SoftSys Web Hosting.
Absolutely professional, reliable and economy services. Tech-support is fantastic too.
