We have the same issue, but the webservices on the prov01 server doesn't work either, seems like it times out after 30-40 minutes of inactivity.
I've read in another thread that this is related to panda antivirus, this isn't the case here. I ran a ethereal dump of the tcp/ip traffic, and it seems like the endpoint mapper doesn't assign a new rpc port for the webservices. Is this related to mps or
the server installation?
The only thing that helps (in my case) is to restart the mps01 server.

What webservice application pool state when it starts to times out? Did you try to recycle pool?

No, restarting the iis or application pool doesn't have any effect.
Right now i can't get any error directly from the mpsws, it just hangs / waiting on the submitted request in the browser.

...after ap. 30 minutes of trying to process my request, the browser shows the "cannot find server or dns error" message. I pretty shure that i got a "the operation timed out" also directly from the mpsws before, not just the mpssamplecp.
After a quick boot of the mps-server, everything is back to normal, no need to recycle the wp or iis on prov01.
Antivirus (CA) and local firewall is disabled on both servers.

the provtest.exe on the mps01 has the same behavior, just hangs without providing any information.
I think this is related to the rpc service somehow. Any ideas how to solve this?

Do you have any group policies that affect server? Try to disable all of them.
Did you try to restart Provisoning Engine COM+ application? Does it solve the problem?
Could you post here error or warning events from MPS server application log?

No group policies is enabled, only default domain policy. That doesn't contain anything, but i'll check. Shut down the com+ object doesn't solve anything either.
All of the affected servers runs on vmware, does that have anything to say in this? there's no particular entries in the eventlog, but I could provide them for you if interested.
I'll found a somewhat ironic workaround, i have scheduled a simple provtest.exe routine that runs every 10minutes, and since then everything has worked as a charm :) This is just a lab-enviroment, so this workaround is ok by me for the moment. I'll have
to properly figure this out before this goes into production..

I would recomend you call Microsoft PSS about this issue. Or you can contact one of Microsoft HMC support patners.

ok, will do. Thanks anyway :)

Did u get any solutiond for this?
I'm having the same sort problem.
Operation Timeout happens after setting credentials when opening mpssamplecp or mpssampleweb.
I've also built the whole hmc solution using vmware servers.

Nope, no solution. Haven't contacted ms pss yet, but will try to do this soon.
Have you tried to schedule a provtest request every 10 minutes, and does this prevent the failure?
