I have had several attempts to do the above.I am looking to add a large watermark thing, but I can't work out if maybe the current CSS won't allow for an underlying image to be shown.
Has anyone had any success in doing this?
Any advice much appreciated.

No, this does not work.
This is what I tried:
Now, it does work if I add the above cod to a NON master page.
So, to my original question: Has anyone been able to create a single, large background image for the master page?

Maybe I don't understand what it is you're trying to accomplish. I just made a masterpage, added the following CSS:
background: url(floataway.jpg) no-repeat fixed center center;
Created a content page, and the content page inherited the background from the master page.
