You can still search in a similar way wiht full text search but it creates indexes allowing to speed up this kind of search. With a non full text approach you have no index that could be used to search Inside a string.
Still see perhaps why this is costly. Do you have to get all fields ? If you have for example binary fields that you don't need it will slow down the retrieval. Also how slow is it? With how many rows returned. For example if you don't enter a criteria,
it might take more time to render a single huge HTML web page rather than to perform the actual query.
Have you tried to test this query Inside SSMS ?
