I've been through this a number of times look at some of my very early posts.
I would start by removing all references to SQL from your Control Panel Add Remove programs. Then look in the Program Files folder and delete all SQL folders.
Look for the 2008 Web Developer Automated installer and select the options to install Visual Web Developer 2008 and SQL Server 2008, be sure yo uhave the free Express version. If you use the full version 30 day trial, you'll have issues later.
this installer has worked for me on Vista and Windows 7, but I had other issues with Vista and installed Win 7, life was much easier.
I know this isn't MS but I think its the correct installer...
