i think i found a better way to ask my question, which started in the controls forum . i'm using a nested repeater structure to generate a <select> element with <optgroup>s. i'm not allowed to put a "runat=server" on my <select> , but i definitely
need to be able to used the selected value of this drop down list in my button click event. how can i find the value of an element such as this <select> when it has an id but i can't put "runat=server" on it?
 - 1: having <select runat="server"><asp:repeater></asp:repeater></select> produces the following error:
The 'Text' property of 'option' does not allow child objects.
 - 2: having <asp:repeater><header><select runat="server"></header><item/><footer></select></footer></asp:repeater> produces the following error in visual studio:
Error 1 Cannot switch views: Element 'select' is missing its closing tag. Server elements cannot span templates. C:\Inetpub\doc\eLation\releasenotes\admin\releaseissues.aspx
and the following error when viewed in a browser:
Unexpected end of file looking for </HeaderTemplate> tag.
