I exported my local copy of the site with content.
Created a DNN on my godaddy site.
Uploaded my skin, and the resource and portal templates.
Then the fun starts.
How do you make the new portal you created, based on the template and resources, the default portal? You can't add a new default alias since it already exists in the db and you cant change the current alias since it is use. Adding new aliases and trying to
use them all seem to lead to 'page not found' at godaddy,
I could not figure out a way to switch to a different default portal.
What did I miss?

BTW, it' not like i missed the default portal setting on the host settings page. It just doesnt work (with godaddy?). I'm pretty sure the problem I am having is godaddy specific with the way they are doing virtual aliases, but i have already spent my money
there so i dont have much choice.

After my resource and portal templates had been placed on my remote site, using ftp (in the right folder, I think Portal\default iirc):
I logged in as host on the hosted portal. All default contents was deleted. It is just a few modules. Then,
Click on Wizard.
Check the box that says, "Build your site from a template (below).
At this point, your named template should be among the list of selectables. If not, something went wrong before you got to this point. As I recall, the rest was fairly straight forward. I believed I checked "replace."
I did have to apply my custom skins individually to the containers to which they were attached on the dev box.
I am surprised by a couple of things; First I had not even looked at the wizard. Partly because it does not show up on the admin menu. And since I got messed up with file manager in the toolbar earlier I had quit using the toolbar, sub-consciously thinking everything
was duplicated in the menus.
Secondly I am surprised no one else mentioned sooner. I have of course bitten the bullet and redirected my home page to a long subdirectory name that I would have preferred not to do. I am still not clear if there is any way other than redirecting to make
a DNN portal the default at godaddy, since it lives in a virtual directory of my hosting site.
again, thanks.

I am very happy to see your success and you are very welcome.
Sorry I can't help with your redirect and subdirectory issues. I use hostonce.com and they take care of all that for me. From what I have heard, godaddy may offer more hands-on control for a DNN practitioner. However, I have been pleased with the cooperation
and goodwill at hostonce. Plus they seem to enjoy good uptime. It took me about a week to communicate successfully what was needed. From my perspective, all I know is
www.alstermotorsports.com is redirected to my htdocs/default.aspx. And it works.
I hope to be playing with child portals soon and learning how to get them properly assigned to a domain.
When I first used the portal export/portal import method to migrate a site, I have to admit it was counter-intuitive. While I certainly do appreciate the feature, I just did not expect it, and I had anticipated a lot more work than was really necessary.

That worked perfect, many thanks.
