We will be publishing a document in the very near future that describes how to run the Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration v3.5 in a "consolidated" server environment. This document describes how to collapse down the number of servers
that are listed in the overall HMC v3.5 reference architecture, by consolidating roles.
I believe for your scenario, this would be a very good thing for you to read and implement once it is posted. Using it has the advantage of it being a known configuration, and if you are using the SPLA licensing model (and you certainly should), then using
this deployment is supportable by Microsoft Support Services.
Keep your eyes on
http://www.microsoft.com/serviceproviders/hosters.mspx as we intend to publish this document before Christmas this year.
In the meantime, I recommend that you download the HMC v3.5 solution by registering on the site and start reading the documentation so you're familiar with the technologies and deployment methodology.
