I have been following the Web Development with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition , Part 1.
I get I get hung up at Setting Up a Provider section at the Provider Configuration -- I recieve a message that the Web Site Administration tool has timed out (even though I have just started!)
I understand this has been asked before and the reply was to check and change the timeout in the config file.My config file has no times to change. Is there something that I am missing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The timeout message is thrown when the session has expired. The default time for the same is 20 minutes.

Try to do an iisreset and then repeat the same steps again. Do you still get a timeout message right away?

Could you give us a more information ...
Like what OS you are using, version of IIS, version of IE?

Also what are the steps you did which led to the timeout .

    Thanks,

If you are using one of the two "default" providers (SQL or Access) on the select provider page, I found it was simpler (fewer bugs) to create a new provider and link it directly to the database you need. Once I created the new provider, I stopped getting the timeout messages.

    Thanks for the reply.
I will now try to give you all of the information:
I am working on a Sony Laptop with XP Home and using IE6
I have installed Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Beta, Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition and MySQL Server 2005 Express

I have been following this first section of a 3 part series here-

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsse/html/VWD_SSE.asp

and have got to this point -Setting Up a Provider- under this section ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool .
With the WSA open, I hit the Provider TAB which gives 2 possibilities to choose from and I pick Select a single provider for all site management data and it gives me:

    Tool Has Timed Out
As a security measure, the Web Site Administration Tool times out after a period of inactivity. To continue configuring your web site, restart the tool.

This happens immediately after I make the selection above—there is no “period of inactivity!”
So that is it in a nutshell---any ideas, thoughts, suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    john

    Thanks for the reply.
I do appreciate the info, however I do not have the mental capacity (knowledge) to do what you suggest. I am just trying to figure this stuff out--I thought that if I installed the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Beta and walked myself through a couple of the demos that I could pick things up fairly quick. NOT! I haven't gotten very far yet.
    Thanks for your help

Actually, you're not doing bad at all! From your last description to Nitasha, it sounds like it's giving you the time-out message on the step just before the one I'm talking about. Sorry I didn't realize you hadn't gotten to that step.

You could try creating a new project (web), and see if you can use the Admin tool on that site. If not, try uninstalling VWD and reinstalling it. Other than that, not sure.

Thanks again for your feedback. I believe that is what I will do next, an un-install and re-install and see how that works. Will let you know how it shakes out!

In a reply to a post I made, I was told to check the web.config file in the C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.40607\ASP.NETWebAdminFiles directory, but there is no setting for the timeout value. Where would one set the session timeout value?

I know this is pretty old, but I found this thread when I was searching for an answer to the same problem.  Fortunately, I was able to solve the issue and I thought I'd share.

All I had to do was close my browser completely, stop the development server (right click on the task bar and select "stop") and then rerun the Admin tool.  I was using firefox as my default browser and I had left it open all night.  Even though I had closed the project, I guess the session cookie was still in the cache and wouldn't allow me to use the tool.  In fact, I was only getting the timeout message after I selected the development server and picked "Open in Web Browser" - it didn't do it automatically when it was timed out.

I'm sure badjuju has either figured this out or moved on, but for anyone else who might have the same issue - hope this helps!
