I need to code something similar to the AutoCompleteExtender, but under ASP.NET 1.1
So, WITHOUT Atlas and WITHOUT the control toolkit
But maybe WITH the MICROSOFT AJAX Library, but I don't know yet if I will use an ajax framework.

So does anyone did something similar in the past ?
Maybe you have sample code ?

well, here's what I would try to do: create a new behavior, base on the default autocompletebehavior and change it so that it performs a general call to a web service (you'd have to use the webrequest object directly instead of using the  _webmethod class)
