Treeview on masterpage, populated in code

I've used the treeview control on my MP, and populate it from a database to create the navigation. The trouble is, when the user clicks one of the links, the treeview reloads again and thus doesn't stay expanded on the nodes which were previously expanded. How can I get around this problem?
