Solution to Resolutions

Boy, I hate this new driver update... I cannot roll back that driver - it just means I will also have to work around it. I have a 17"... now the bladdy thing is squashing up horizontally on 1280x1024, making text barely readable. Now I am using 1024x800 - whoa, that looks huge. I want a 1152x768 but how can I get that on Windows XP? I had that option on Windows 2003, 2002 and maybe 98... But I set my eyes on something else now... custom resolutions. I managed to get a 1280x900 and it looks perfect... but that is the sacrifice of Direct3D then with that solution. How would one make their resolution of the desktop to be any dimension they want? Frustrating looking at this big garbage }:) !!!

If you have not noticed, your screen is your workshop, desk or whatever you may call it to "normal" life. You will always try to make the best out of your workspace... I work with ASP.NET - I am just trying to make the best out of it. And if you still insist that this is off topic to .NET, take a look at the title of the forum - "Free4All"!

I sorted out my problems. I just brought a new monitor... there goes my budget allocation for Whidbey.

drastic solution, buying a new monitor just cause you can't get a mode on it. may not work, but, you can unselect 'show only modes my configuration supports' and get all possible modes. sometimes, and I've seen this happen, you can happily run a mode which your config denies support for. weird eh? not saying this'll work on everything, maybe a driver change, or a masquerade of your monitor as something it's not might help. I've messed around with My GeForce MX and Sony 21" and found modes I never knew existed

Not really... I had an optimal resolution but the monitor's age caught up. Besides a certain mode, it has been some time since my refresh rate has been higher than 60Hz. I am just interested where you found this 'show only modes my configuration supports'. I could not find it... is it exclusive to GeForce MX? I have a S3 ProSavageDDR.

Whidbey is a year in the future (2nd half 2004 - I would somehow bet this means 4th quarter). Buying a monitor NOW should not have ANY impact on your budget allocation for Whidbey a year in the future.

Is this a direct insult. Yes, Whidbey is a long time away but to buy it, I have start saving now. That is close to R5000 (an estimate of price for upgrade of professional - just in case the exchange gets a bad rate by then). Regarding that I already had R700 to spend on anything when I started saving for Whidbey, I put it towards with other Whidbey money (R400). That means I had R1000 before buying the monitor. If Whidbey comes out in the 2nd quarter, and me calculating my cash flow, I could get it in the early 3rd quarter. A 17" monitor of good quality costs ~R950. In fact, why should I discuss my financial status? I have something a lot richer than what you will ever have - a high standard of proffession compared to you (that counts maturity, respect for others [which you ought to have if you are an MVP] and dignity).

Given a Beta in 1st Half and half a year before release, chances are extreme you wont see anything before October/November next year. Even if the Beta comes out in March (which would put it into the middle of the first half whee it is announced) you would talk about a September release at best. ::In fact, why should I discuss my financial status? Your "high standard of confession" seems not to include the ability to read and understand what MS means when they say "2nd Half". In this case I am really happy I have, instead, the ability to read and understand product announcements and the logic to know what 2nd Half means given how software development works and how hugh the task is that MS faces.

I found the reason about a minute ago. These cards support custom resolutions: Matrox G-series, Parhelia, NVidia, 3dfx or ATI Radeon. These cards cannot be supported for user defined resolutions: S3 (there goes mine), SiS, Trident, Intel, and ATI Rage and Rage128. But I got that monitor lying here... I can make a plan and get some profit off the newer monitor (because I brought it at retail price) and buy a graphics card. That means my money can repopulate itself... or maybe I should buy another graphics card for multi-monitor.

> or maybe I should buy another graphics card for multi-monitor. yeah! multiple monitor rigs are little short of awesome - stick all your floating toolbars on one and actually work on the other - I had 2x21" Sony CRTs running off my machine at one point, both at 1600x1200 and it was the greatest thing ever. Of course I mostly used it to watch cartoons on one and web surf on the other ;-)

2x21"...that would be tops :D Though I get around the problem by having two pc's with two monitors, so watching movies etc while working/playing doesn't impact on my budget arsed pc hardware :/ (my best pc is a Duron 950) Time for an upgrade... Andrew

I've got a single 21" on my Athlon 2100/1GB and a 17" on my P2.2/512Mb - not enough desk space at home, plus gaming on a dual-monitor isn't that easy to set up. :-D . I like that desk! About the deskspace, I have plenty if I do layout my desk properly to cater to 17" CRT but the problem that might occur is a cable being too short. However, my friend is eyeing out the old monitor which is not in use now and yesterday he asked what was wrong with it. I replied nothing if you get the right graphics card :-) . Not like he needs a big resolution - he is a serious gamer so that also caters for that "special" graphics card needed. He bound to ask price today or tomorrow and then I will decided then what to do.

I bidded my monitor between two friends and they gained about R200 from buying one from Makro. They already got the card and they know specifically what is wrong with it - no cheating. Damn, made a profit from a predicted loss... I won something back :-D . Sorry Thona - not the news you wanted to hear.

My universe looks a little blue today with a slight shift to the left. Don't know why, I guess a new monitor might do it :) .
