Exclude filetypes from Publish, Sync, View

Is there *not* a way to exclude files/folders from WebMatrix view, remote view, publish and sync?
Say, by modding the Publish Settings file or Profile?
Seems this would be fundamental feature, or at least doable by manual config edits. What am I missing?
