ASP.NET Forums - Official Beta Release

The new ASP.NET forums is available as a LIVE beta. Based on feedback from all of you, the forums will be easier to read, faster to load, and have reduced clutter. To begin using the preview, please use beta-forums.asp.net. Since this is a LIVE beta, all post and replies made to the beta will appear on the current site, and vice versa.

Over the next week, we will review your feedback on the beta and the new forums will be the default soon.

in this new forums, where we post the question , reading the question or comment give a lil strain to the eye.

and the design seems to be having a lot of empty spaces everywhere, it may be because of my love with the current

look and feel of this forum.

Can you tell us that what is the difference in this new forum.

There should be some major performance improvements due to overall optimization. The page weight, css size, and number of requests are reduced dramatically. The create post page should be an area with very noticeable performance gains.

From a feature perspective, here is a partial list of some things that have changed. A more comprehensive list may be coming.

Faceted "instant" search
Forum-focused Search on forum pages
More discoverable "Answered" post item treatment
Post preview experience is ajax-enhanced
New code highlighter
Improved tagging
Improved mobile support
Revamped Reply experience
New Unresolved Threads shortcut
Simplified and re-organized user profiles
Added Twitter to user profile
Updated user "badges"

Really excited at the visual refresh so please dont take all my negative comments to heart, just honest feedback [:)]

Seems you have clamped the design down to a fixed width? Not sure yet but it feels like this will be worse than a fluid design
Top Answerers doesnt have the rank, just the name and number of posts answered. It would be helpful to easily see what rank we are on
Top Answerers - Add an container div around the profile picture so they are all sat in same width column
Top Answerers - Is it intentional to have "System.Web.Mvc.UrlParameter" in the url?
Top marks for putting the inbox count in the top nav :) much awaited feature. I would even welcome a pop up message bar akin to Stack Overflow to remind me to answer these direct mails
Unresolved threads - The "on [date]" doesn't read right when its a few minutes ago like "on 5 minutes ago"
All thread lists and view thread pages - Letters not being displayed correctly such as apostrophie is displayed as ' (example)
It would really be very helpful if you could just post links on the page and have the editor auto convert anything starting with http:// (etc)
Unanswered Posts - Replies column is just empty - should be 0's ?
Profile - My Friends - If the name is too long it just mashes together with the next name in the list, perhaps set overflow to hide it? (Tested in FF)
Profile - Recent Posts - Add a "View all posts" at the end of the recent snippets? I know you can get to it by click the post count further up but logically you would read those and think, what else have they posted
BUG - Thread - Appear to have the option to "Mark as answer" on my own post in this thread even tho it is not my thread.
Profile - I like being able to see the break down of the points in the right hand column, I have often wondered if people have earned their points from moderating or from answering questions and this will satisfy my idle curiosity :)
Profile - If nothing entered for Social or Links the sections are just empty. If nothing is entered in the description at the top you get a "nothing entered yet" type message.
Profile - Recent posts snippets are not encoding "quote" bbmarkup style code
If you have an error when posting it should be in RED. I just had to change the quote reference in the line above because I got "
<div class="CommonFormFieldName"> Message Non matching quote blocks in post" and it wasn't clear what was going on straight away... </div>

Unrelated to the forums

Please make a way for me to access previous community spotlight articles after they roll off the front page. They stick in my head and then when i'm answering questions on the forums its hard to find them again.

Ok thats enough at the moment, I will keep notes though as I get more familiar with the new system [:)]

Profile - Community Recognition box - Wording of About isn't clear. It made me think more about MetalAsp not "About Community Recognition"
Profile - Specialities - Doesn't display a "nothing entered yet" message if blank
Profile - The break down of how the points are earned is taking a very long time to load (well over a minute)
Points System - You are supposed to earn points for being featured as an article of the day. I checked my breakdown and it doesn't list this still. I was told that these points would be added on when the feature is implemented, not sure if its still on its way?
User badges - I also heard that user badges akin to the embeddable StackOverflow badges are in the works. Is this something that might be in the new forums?

Reply Screen - Dont like the really small window for text you are replying to, I want to be able to see the whole post I'm replying to without have to scroll within small box (only tested in FF)
Reply Screen - Stickiness - What is this? Can anyone force their replies to stay at the top? Should I get this interface or should it be admin only? Whatever it is it should have a little ? to hover over and explain when to use it.
Reply Screen - Tags - I never use the tags as I don't see the usefulness of them, however, when you are in the reply screen you just see a list of the existing tags with no edit interface to add your own tags to the reply
Thread - IP being displayed - Is this necessary? I mean its -probably- harmless but it does make it kind of easy if you want to give it a whirl and try to attack somebody for their opinions on the forums. I mean im not normally paranoid but it just surprised me to see it so prominently displayed.
Quick Reply - Happy to see that click the X / cancel button doesnt make the page postback any more [:)]

Alert Moderators Form - The form has a breadcrumb in the top. I get an error trying to view the individual moderator forums (assume its a security issue saying I dont have permission) but I can poke my nosey little nose into this page which I dont think I should have access to [:)] It doesnt give away -much- information but still seems like a potential security risk.

Nice clean design, great to see asp.net get some attension.

Maybe a way to get to the top of the page on long threads would be good.

Private Messages - It has a Mark As Resolved button. It shouldn't be there I dont think and it acts wierdly, you can click it but not unclick it and the cursor doesnt change to a pointer when you have over it.
Private Messages - Smilies dont work, just get a broken image (or the alt tag "Smile" inserted in FF)
Private Messages - Alert Moderators - Is this required for private communications?
Profile - As previously reported that names overwrite the next names it seems that it if there is a space in the username then the grid layout breaks (see Vinz profile)
Edit Profile - My timezone has been corrupted - was set to UTC Cassablanca, but I have had it set to UTC London previously
Profile - Community Recognition - Points breakdown now seems to have stopped functioning
Edit Profile - Favorites - Friends - Actions Column - Icon is for Private Message but all urls are the same and point to Edit Profile (of my own profile)
Edit Profile - Favorites - Users Watching You - Click the private message throws an error on the next page
Edit Profile - Clicking Save All Changes - The success notification bubble has rounded corners on the bottom of the message box which dont line up with the rest of the design.
Profile - Social - Incorrect stemming of my name (ends in an s, link says "Matthew Harris's website")
